> A Brief History Of Project Hope
Author: ColdinCbus |
Project Hope began as a dream back in May of 2003. In August of 2003 it became a reality.

Below is a very brief history of Project Hope.

Perhaps the first mention of a "Team Discovery Hope Machine" (term coined by Caliban) can be found in this post by Slava. A few days later, he ordered up a vote!. This began on 3/21/03 with high hopes.

A few short days later, we started looking for potential hosts. This was a good heated discussion and we found our first 4 hosts: Babacher, Nightfall, JMartin and Dersgniw.

We also had a poll where the name "Project Hope" edged over "Team Discovery Hope Machine" by 5 votes. There was another poll where we decided to call the blades TD-MOJO1,2,3,etc.

In the beginning of April, we had our first discussion about a Board of Directors and then by May our first board was announced.

We had a Chairman (Slava), Treasurer (Simplykristi), Secretary (Jmartin) 4 hosts (Babacher, Nightfall, JMartin and Dersgniw), and general members (HiVolt, RXDOC, SlashDot14 and ColdinCbus ). We had a new website put together by owN3D and were ready to roll.

Now was the time for our members to put their money where their mouths were. And they delivered with flying colors. In the middle of May, people started donating and we saw some unexpected challenges.

Our very generous members offered large amounts of cash if certain challenges were met. A lot of people went broke during this month giving all they could. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. By June 8th, we had collected $1,553.20 .

On June 9th, we found our first Chairman's Report made by the always inspirational Slava. By July 6th, Kristi informed us that we had collected $2348.02, then Slava posted his next Chairman's Report. In this time we also voted on CPU and Memory.

In August Bruce (Babacher) announced Mojo1 and Mojo2 were running and posted some construction pics. Slava posted another report soon after. In August a wonderful monkey, Mojo Jojo, introduced himself and was an inspiration to the project a great little mascot.

And in October, Madzookeeper announce his very generous challenge.

In January of 2004, Slava posted another Chairman's Report where he discussed the new TDPH Cafe Shop and that we now had 12 blades running for Project Hope.

Fast forward to the beginning of 2006. Our members have donated over $7,000. We have 26 blades having crunched for a total of over 38 years. The TSC blades are number number 2 on the team (9 overall), and the UD blades are number 13 on the team (626 overall). We are still growing and our members are still incredibly generous.

Let's move ahead now to early 2008. TDPH was ready for a new direction. It was decided that we had many toothless old blades and it was finally time to upgrade. The previous goal of TDPH was to build powerful crunchers from scratch, but we realized that it was now possible to purchase prebuilt quad-core machines for a price lower than what we could home build. One quad core machine had the processing power of 10 AMD 2600+ and it could be purchased for around $500 (if the timing was right). Funds were low and volunteers for hosts were not plentiful. The team decided that we should replace older blades with new quad blades and the TDPH board was given more freedom to do this quickly if funds were available and a deal was available.

Now we move to early 2009. We have sold some of our older blades on Ebay, had a few fund raisers and jumped on some great deals through Dell. TDPH currently has 3 quad core Dells. These babies have helped push TDPH to number 10 on the team for WCG. At this point in time, the TSC project has completed so when we look at TDPH, we see some impressive numbers at the time that a new board is being elected. As of 2009, TDPH has dedicated almost 90 YEARS of processing power to finding cures (in less than 6 years!).
