I havn't said much, or voted much, but this caught my eye, was this a vote for the UPS?
In my experience, a 350 Watt battery backup, is not enough to support more than a XP 2200.
I have seen this from experience, and putting 250 Watt battery backup's on them, they just shut right down. I can't imagine 100 more Watts would be any more different.

A couple of hosts said that they did not have a backUPS. I hope that someone sees your post. If not, PM slava over on BBR.

I would be less then qualified to answer this question.
But I'm sure one of our technical members will come along and give us the answer.
We also stopped the order on the UPS till this can be answered.
I believe Kristi was about to place an order for the UPS for the two hosts that do not have them.
But since this was brought up we decided to hold off till we got a definite answer on what we might require.

Kristi, do we have enough extra funds to cover S&H?

Hi,
I think that we will have enough funds to cover it all. :-)

A bit more expensive, but would probably be able to handle 1 or 2 blades at most, without monitors.
Belkin Home Office UPS 500VA Model F6H500-SER Retail
Provides 8 outlets with surge protection, 4 of which provide battery backup.
Comes with a $50,000 Connected Equipment Warranty
Comes with Belkin 3 Year Product Warranty
Free shipping from Newegg.
$59.99 a piece

I use APC specifically at work on the servers, which range from 700VA up to 1200 VA, but they are rather expensive.
I can tell you, on my main pc here at home, I have an APC 500 VA, that keeps my monitor and PC (Home built XP 1800) going for about 5 minutes without power.
When I place a 350 on my PC, and unplug the power, the system dies right down.

This is a link I found on the 500.... with a slightly lower price

What do you think of this company?
Will it do?

The UPS looks good, the fact that the company has a phone number looks good.
Although I could find no reference to them at resellerratings.com or pricegrabber.com
That could be a good thing, or a bad thing.
Shipping is going to get you with that company though, I added it to my cart, and they want 17.98 to ship it.

Maybe we should shop around a little more then and see if we can get the best of both worlds.
A low price and good service.

Just my 2-cents worth, but a system going down wouldn't seem to hurt a UD cruncher. It just starts back pretty much where it was when the system comes back up.
I don't know anything about TSC, but I don't see why we would need to keep a UD cruncher running for an extra 5 minutes just to do an orderly shutdown. So, do we really need a powerful UPS?

You bring up a great point, one can get a very nice Tripp Light Super 7 surge protector (I use these on the PC's at work) for $20 with free fed ex shipping at newegg.
Especially if you have the capability to run the crunchers as a service, it would seem they would start crunching again, after power came back on.
About the only place, that might have a need for a UPS for crunching, would be someone that has frequent power problems, or lots of surges.
The super7 has a UL Verified Surge Suppression Joule Rating: 2350, which is very high.
I also found the super7 at CDW for $16.48, but that's not with shipping.

I'm wondering if these 2 would suffice.
We where looking at the 2 links earlier.

Or should we still look into the APC 500?

I still think, if you go with anything less than the 500, it's not going to be worth have a UPS, as it will probably just shut right down, I have a 350 setting right here next to me, its worthless on my newer computers.
I would say, either go with the 500, or just go with a cheaper surge strip that's not a battery backup.

OK I can't recall how many times the electricity has blinked enough to the point where my pc shut down. Most of the time I am not here when it happens. After each power outage, my pc has come back A-OK. I just click over on UD and my WU is there. TSC will just give me new candidates. No biggie. We could save ourselves some money with the power strip.

If we end up having say 4 blades, then we'd need another UPS, right? Just wondering because I know very little about them. Is the only benefit of a UPS over surge protector that the system will stay up in a power outage? If so, I might agree with just getting a really good surge protector instead. Maybe a little rare downtime isn't worth the cost? We do need to protect the equipment though.. Just something to think about I guess.

Yup, I would say, that for each 2 blades, you would need at least a 500 UPS.
And yes you are correct, the UPS would allow for about 5 minutes of battery backup in a poweroutage, it can also allow for a gracefull shutdown.
But for the project, I am with the others, surge protection should be good enough.

I think a surge supressor would be fine for this project. I already have a UPS, and you can be sure I would use it. I just think a UPS would be nice, but is isn't a necessary thing.
